Taste Testing of Boxed M-A-C (Macaroni and Cheese)

Before I move on to restaurant and other eatery offerings of mac and cheese, I wanted to review a taste test of some boxed macaroni and cheese.  Several years ago, some moms and kids got together and tasted 5 brands of boxed macaroni and cheese, though sadly, no one thought to bring Kraft (the blue box!).

The favorite of the batch was Annie's Shells and Real Aged Cheddar.  Moms thought it was perfect in every way.  The kids said it was "great".

Next favorite was the Pasta Roni Cheddar Macaroni.   However, the children's comments ranged all over the board from "bland", "is the best" and "is the worst".  Moms comments were more unsatisfactory, ranging from "so-so" to "bland".

#3  was Annie's Whole Wheat Shells with White Cheddar. Both the kids and the moms liked this one a lot, but there did not seem to be much sauce on the the macaroni.  One caveat; the preparer omitted the optional  butter, and also used non-fat milk.

# 4 was Costco's Kirkland Macaroni and Cheese.  Moms were not impressed with the cardboard consistancy, grainy texture and flavorlessness.  Kids said - "it is cheesy".  An option to improve this brand - put extra cheese slices on it.

In last place was the most expensive brand tested; Springfield Macaroni and Cheese.  The cheese came in a tin rather than packet, which imparted a "metallic", "zingy", and "odd flavor" to the dish. Several comments of "I don't like it" from the children, except for one who said "I don't like it, but I'm hungry so I will finish it."

Further posts will explore my restaurant ratings of M-A-C.
